Using the MBTA to Travel Around Boston:

You will find that getting around on the MBTA (known around here as simply, “The T”) is the most inexpensive way to explore the city and the suburbs. Here are a few pointers:

  • The average fare is around $2.00. Each station has a fare vending machine, at which you can buy a limited value ticket (Charlie Ticket), or a Charlie Card, to which you can add value. However, it will not work on the commuter rail. You can also buy commuter rail tickets from the vending machine. The vending machines take cash or credit cards. If you plan on taking public transportation frequently, consider either a day Link Pass offering unlimited travel on bus, boat, and subway for $9.00 (1 day), or a Weekly Link Pass for $15.00 (7 days)
  • For a comprehensive look at what the T has to offer, please visit www.mbta.com. Keep in mind, though, that like other similar programs that give directions, take the MBTA’s directions with a grain of salt. It occasionally makes a trip more complicated than it has to be.
  • The T is comprised of 4 different lines, each known by its color: red, green, blue, and orange. ENC is just off the red line, so directions to ENC are listed below.
  • The red line divides into two lines: one to Ashmont, one to Braintree. It’s really important to get on the train going to the right destination because they both share a track. ENC is a ten minute walk from the Wollaston stop on the Braintree branch.
  • The green line divides into four lines: B, C, D, and E. Lines B, C, and D all will get you to Fenway. The E line will get you to the symphony, The Museum of Fine Arts, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
  • The most important thing you need to know (besides your destination, of course!) is the last stops on whatever line you’re riding. For instance, if you want to visit the Harvard Natural History Museum, you will want to take the red line toward Alewife, then get off at the Harvard stop.

Beyond Boston - the T and the Commuter Trains:

The T operates in Boston and to some of the metro Boston areas. To go farther than the T will take you, there is the commuter rail. Northbound trains leave from North Station, and South and Westbound trains leave from South Station. Most Amtrak trains arrive and depart from South Station. South Station is also conveniently located on the Red Line of the MBTA, so a quick transfer will get you on the subway towards ENC! Suburb destinations are where the MBTA website comes in handy: you can look up commuter rail destinations and schedules. If you’re not near a computer, both stations have information desks at which you can get schedules and ask questions about the commuter rail. Commuter rail fares vary by how far you’re traveling, the maximum one-way being $7.75.

Flying to the Conference:

Flying Into Boston:

If you are flying into Logan International, you will have the option of easily accessing public transportation. Otherwise, it may be in your best interest to rent a vehicle or share a cab with other conference attendees. There are multiple airports in the Boston area. The following might be helpful in choosing which one will best suit your travel needs.

Logan International Airport and Directions to ENC: Logan International is located in East Boston 11 miles from Eastern Nazarene College. The drive is approximately 25 minutes depending on traffic conditions.

Recommended transportation options once you arrive at Logan International Airport:

Shuttle: A shuttle from Boston's Logan Airport to Eastern Nazarene College will be available on the day of your arrival, beginning on Saturday, June 7. The shuttle will stop at the 'arrivals' area of each terminal during scheduled times throughout the day. There will be no individual appointments for pick-up, in order to serve as many conference attendees as possible. Once registrations are finalized after the May 23 deadline, we will announce those pick-up times, so please fill out your arrival information on your registration form, or notify the Conference Registrar as soon as your arrangements are made at confreg@acl.org.

The cost of this shuttle will be $10.00 per person, one-way, cash only, the day of your arrival.
***At the end of the conference, shuttle service will be available on Friday (all day) and Saturday (morning only). The return trip will also cost $10.00 per person, cash. In order to avoid confusion, the details will be announced during the conference.

Taxi: A number of taxi services will be available once you arrive at Logan. You might consider sharing a taxi with friends and colleagues. The cost for a one-way trip to the college will be approximately $40.00.

Subway: The 'T' is also available from the airport and will bring you right into Wollaston Station. This is the most economically friendly option. This station is .7 miles from Eastern Nazarene College, and it is a pleasant ten-minute walk to campus, or you can call the Nease Library after you arrive at Wollaston Station and they will send someone to pick you up (the special transportation number will be posted soon on the website).

MBTA Directions to ENC from Logan: In the baggage claim area, locate the Charlie Card vending machine. If you plan on using public transportation often, consider buying a Charlie Card, to which you can add value as you need it. You also get a $.30 discount on fares. The total cost of the trip to Wollaston will be approximately $2.00.

The Silver Line stop is located outside of the baggage claim (it’s a bus). Board the Silver Line and get off at South Station (most people on the Silver Line will also be getting off at South Station). Once at South Station, follow the signs to the Red Line. You will want to be on the side of the tracks headed toward Braintree (some signs may say Outbound). When the train arrives, make sure the signs say Braintree, or the conductor says it’s a Braintree train. Ride until you reach Wollaston (conductors usually announce stops), exit the station and walk about 10 minutes to ENC. (Check out MapQuest or a similar service for printable directions in advance!) For more tips on getting to ENC, see the ENC website.

Hotel Shuttle Services: Many Boston and Quincy area hotels offer airport shuttle service. Be sure to check availability, schedules, and policies when you make your lodging reservations.

Harbor Express: The Harbor Express commuter boat will take you from Logan International to Quincy for $12.00. Then you can take a taxi to ENC.

Car Rental: Logan has a number of options for car rentals. Complimentary shuttles run on a regular schedule from the arrivals level to each respective rental company. If you are making arrangements to have a vehicle for the week, all major vendors will be available to you when you reach Logan. Driving directions are available through the conference website. Also, there is an Enterprise car rental location in Quincy.
